Morena claims QR‑code vote‑buying scheme in Coahuila, Mexico

Mexico’s ruling Morena party alleges that the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) bought votes in the recent Coahuila local deputy election. According to party leader Ariadna Montiel, ballots photographed during the count show markings that indicate voters received 200 pesos per vote, with payments made through QR‑code links to a platform where buyers uploaded images of their ballot and QR code to receive cash or Oxxo deposits.

Morena presented the photos and videos at a press conference, describing the operation as a systematic “QRGate” and saying similar tactics were used in Durango’s municipal elections the previous year. The party asserts that PRI operatives distributed QR codes before and on election day, enabling the alleged bribery scheme to be tracked and paid.

The accusations, posted on Morena’s social media, call for an investigation into alleged vote‑buying and coercion, while the PRI has not yet responded publicly.
