Maru Campos accuses Morena leader Ariadna Montiel of criminal ties

Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos has accused Ariadna Montiel, the national leader of the Morena party, of having links to organized crime. During an interview with journalist Carlos Loret de Mola, Campos stated she personally raised these concerns with President Claudia Sheinbaum during a meeting in Ciudad Juárez.

The accusations stem from reports attributed to federal security sources, which suggest that in early 2024, Montiel met with Aureliano Guzmán Loera, known as ‘El Guano’—the brother of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán—in Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua. The reports allege that a pact was negotiated to ensure the criminal group ‘Los Salgueiro’ supported Morena candidates during the 2024 elections in exchange for territorial control spanning from Sinaloa to Chihuahua.

Montiel has firmly rejected these allegations, calling them baseless and demanding that evidence be presented to the authorities. The controversy has intensified political tensions between the state government of Chihuahua and the federal administration, with Morena officials characterizing the governor's claims as an attack on the party.
