Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala detained; Morena expels his brother Roldán
A federal judge ordered preventive detention for Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, alias “R1”, and associate Jesús Salvador Vela Salazar. Both were transferred to the Federal Center for Social Readaptation No. 1 “Altiplano” in the State of Mexico after being captured in the Los Naranjos colonia of Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco. The authorities accuse R1 of possession with intent to trade clorhydrate methamphetamine, possession of military‑grade cartridges and illegal firearms, and identify him as the intellectual author of the homicide of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo, who was shot on 1 November 2025 during the Festival of the Candles.
The ruling party, Morena, issued multiple statements distancing itself from the detainee. It affirmed that Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala never belonged to the party and that his brother, former Apatzingán mayor Roldán Álvarez Ayala, was expelled from Morena in November 2025 following the allegations linking the family to organized‑crime activity.
