Rubén Rocha Moya resumes Sinaloa governorship amid U.S. investigations
Rubén Rocha Moya has returned to his role as Governor of Sinaloa after a 112-day temporary leave. His return comes amid ongoing investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice, which has accused him and several other officials of conspiracy related to drug trafficking and corruption involving the Sinaloa Cartel.
Rocha Moya has dismissed the U.S. allegations as “false” and motivated by political interference. However, his decision to resume office has caused significant friction within his own political coalition. The national leadership of the Morena party has officially distanced itself from the move, stating the decision was strictly personal and that they had no prior knowledge of it.
A group of 23 Morena and PVEM governors issued a joint statement criticizing the move, urging Rocha Moya to act with “maturity and responsibility.” They argued that personal interests should not supersede national interests or the stability of the state. Within the Mexican Congress, Morena deputy coordinator Ricardo Monreal has called for the governor to reconsider and request leave again to allow the Mexican Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to conclude its investigations.
