Morena party faces nepotism allegations in Mexico

Allegations of political favoritism and nepotism are rising within Mexico's Morena party as the group selects state coordinators ahead of the 2027 elections. Critics argue that the party is using opaque selection processes to mask the practice of hand-picking candidates closely tied to current governors, rather than utilizing transparent statistical methods or public surveys as promised.

In Zacatecas, the appointment of Verónica Díaz Robles as state coordinator has sparked internal friction. Díaz is identified as a virtual candidate for the governorship in 2027 and has been linked to the political influence of Governor David Monreal. Observers note her previous marriage to Luis Enrique Monreal Ávila, brother of David, Ricardo, and Saúl Monreal, raising questions about the accumulation of power within a single family.

Similar patterns of perceived favoritism have been reported in Quintana Roo, Baja California, and Guerrero, where selected candidates often share close ties to sitting governors. These developments occur despite President Claudia Sheinbaum’s political stance against electoral nepotism.
