Mexico labor market adds 1.3 million jobs as minimum wage rises

Mexico has seen significant labor market developments between August 2025 and August 2026. According to data from INEGI, the country added 1.3 million jobs during this period, bringing the economically active population to 62.6 million people.

Labor reforms have impacted worker welfare, notably through a substantial increase in the minimum wage. The daily minimum wage reached 315 pesos in 2026, representing a 154 percent real increase since 2018. This has boosted purchasing power from 0.8 to 1.9 basic food baskets, with a government target of 2.5 baskets by 2030.

Additional improvements include a reduction in long working hours, with the percentage of people working more than 48 hours a week dropping from 27.1 percent to 22.2 percent over five years. A gradual reduction of the workweek from 48 to 40 hours is also underway, expected to benefit approximately 13 million workers. Furthermore, 199,454 digital platform workers have gained full access to social security as of August 2026.
