Morena State Coordinator Jimmy Bonilla Varela Killed in Puebla
Jimmy Bonilla Varela, the state coordinator of the ruling Morena party in Amozoc, Puebla, was shot dead on the early morning of 1 August. He was traveling in a white Toyota Hilux on the Amozoc‑Teziutlán highway near the San Agustín Tlaxco auxiliary junction in the municipality of Acajete when his vehicle was stopped and a bullet struck him in the head. Authorities arrived around 06:00 h and found him dead inside the vehicle.
Bonilla, 32, was also a former municipal regidor and a teacher at the Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos del Estado de Puebla (CECyTE). The Fiscalía General del Estado has not yet determined the motive, the number of assailants, or made any arrests. The killing underscores the persistent wave of violence in Puebla, a state whose governor, Alejandro Armentano, has been promoting security measures but where attacks on public officials and party members continue.
