Moreno: 4-year-old boy killed by pitbull attack

A four-year-old boy, identified as Homero Mauro Leonardo Fernández, died following a pitbull attack in Francisco Álvarez, within the Moreno district of Buenos Aires province. The incident occurred at a residence in the La Providencia neighborhood while the child was under the care of his godmother, Yohana Mercado, 31.

Preliminary investigations suggest the woman briefly left the child alone to pick up her daughter from a skating activity. During this interval, the family dog reportedly entered the house through a small window or vent and attacked the boy. Medical personnel arrived at the scene but could only confirm the child's death.

Prosecutor Carina Saucedo of the Morón Judicial Department has ordered the arrest of Mercado, charging her with involuntary manslaughter (homicidio culposo), a charge involving death caused by negligence or failure to fulfill duties of care. Authorities have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, and the dog has been placed under the custody of the municipal Zoonosis department.
