Morgan Freeman condemns AI voice cloning as theft
Actor Morgan Freeman has spoken out against the use of artificial intelligence to digitally replicate his voice, describing the practice as ‘theft’. In an interview with ITV News, Freeman addressed the rising threat of deepfakes and the increasing ability of AI tools to create highly convincing digital copies of famous personalities.
Freeman advised other artists facing similar issues to take legal action, stating, ‘On one hand, it is quite nice. On the other hand, it is theft. Hire lawyers.’ He also highlighted the growing difficulty in tracing the origins of such unauthorized content due to the rapid evolution of AI technology.
The unauthorized use of voice and image has become a central conflict between the entertainment industry and AI software developers. Creators are calling for stronger protections regarding consent, compensation, and the right to control their digital identity and likeness.
