Universities worldwide revamp AI curricula as generative AI reshapes teaching

Morgan State University announced a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, launching this fall to equip students with skills in AI models, cybersecurity, quantum machine learning and responsible AI development. The program follows a broader shift in higher education, with institutions worldwide updating curricula to address generative AI tools.

A recent international survey of 763 computer‑science educators from 49 countries found that 69 % believe AI has changed the skills needed for software development. The majority have already altered teaching methods, moving away from pure code‑writing toward code‑understanding, debugging and problem‑solving, and incorporating oral exams and project‑based assessments. Concerns focus on growing student dependency on AI tools and the risk of plagiarism.

These changes reflect rapid developments in AI‑driven classroom tools, including AI avatars that can attend classes, AI agents that can generate discussion posts, and coding assistants such as ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot that can solve typical programming assignments at average‑student level. Educators are responding by redesigning assessments, requiring AI‑use disclosures, and introducing prompt‑engineering instruction to ensure graduates can both leverage and critically evaluate AI technologies.
