Māori delegation faces scrutiny over Israel visit

A delegation of Māori leaders visiting Israel under the theme of “business and innovation” is facing public scrutiny regarding the trip's purpose, timing, and funding. The visit occurs amid ongoing criticism from New Zealand regarding Israeli government actions in the occupied West Bank and the military campaign in Gaza.

Questions have been raised concerning the organization of the trip and the extent of engagement with Palestinian organizations. Former delegate Riki Manarangi stated that Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized and funded the visit, covering essential costs such as transport, accommodation, and food. Northland Regional Council chair Pita Tipene is among those who have recently visited Israel.

The controversy follows a September 2025 United Nations Commission of Inquiry finding that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a conclusion that Israel has rejected.
