Māori economy faces growth challenges ahead of 2026 election

The Māori economy is expanding in scale and ambition, though businesses face significant hurdles including rising operating costs, workforce pressures, and limited access to capital. Traci Houpapa, Chief Executive of the Federation of Māori Authorities, has highlighted the need for political parties to provide policies that unlock the sector's full potential, particularly regarding infrastructure investment and whenua development.

Māori enterprises are active in diverse sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism, and technology. However, as the 2026 election approaches, concerns persist regarding whether current political platforms adequately address workforce capability and the ability of small to medium-sized Māori businesses to manage everyday costs while seeking sustainable employment opportunities.
