Moringa supplement Salmonella outbreak spreads across U.S

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified moringa leaf‑powder capsules as the source of a Salmonella Typhimurium and Newport outbreak first announced in May 2026. Initial testing linked 18 illnesses across 14 states, with seven people hospitalized.

The investigation was reopened with 22 additional patients, adding four new states—Oregon, Idaho, South Dakota and Alaska—and raising the total number of hospitalizations to 32, a 29% hospitalization rate. Cases now span more than 30 states, affecting patients from less than one year to 81 years old, with illness onset dates ranging from August 2025 to April 2026. Whole‑genome sequencing showed the bacterial strains were genetically closely related.

Two manufacturers have recalled affected products, including Total Nutrition (TMVitamins and Doctor’s Pride brands) and Mogo Moringa. Consumers are urged to discard or return any moringa supplement containing leaf powder, especially Live It Up Super Greens, Why Not Natural capsules and TNVitamins moringa capsules.
