Moringen: AfD Plans Party Meeting Near Concentration Camp Memorial, Prompting Protests

The regional AfD branch in Moringen intends to hold a party conference in the town hall, just ten metres from the former Nazi concentration‑camp site and 30 metres from the memorial. The proposal has drawn strong opposition from the Lagergemeinschaft und Gedenkstätte KZ Moringen, which says the event violates the dignity of Holocaust victims. A demonstration and street festival organized by anti‑right‑wing groups, churches, schools, trade unions and local NGOs are planned for June 19, expecting around 1,000 participants. Police are involved in arranging routes and security for both the protest and the party meeting.

Local authorities note that, under the venue’s usage rules, they cannot deny the hall to a legally registered party, even if the location is controversial. The AfD’s ties to far‑right figures such as Björn Höcke have been highlighted, raising concerns about the symbolism of holding the event so close to a site of Nazi persecution.
