Buenos Aires launches 2.3 trillion peso plan to mitigate Super Niño risks
Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof has launched a provincial prevention and mitigation plan to address the potential impacts of the ‘Super Niño’ climate phenomenon. The plan involves an investment exceeding 2.3 trillion pesos and the creation of an interministerial table to coordinate actions with the province's 135 municipalities.
The strategy is organized into three levels: monitoring and information, prevention, and structural works. Key measures include expanding the meteorological station network, implementing a provincial monitoring visor, and conducting hydraulic maintenance such as dredging and cleaning streams. Authorities warned of a high probability—estimated between 90% and 95%—of intense weather events occurring toward the end of spring and beginning of summer.
Kicillof criticized the national government under President Javier Milei, alleging that the administration is withholding 293 billion pesos from the Water Fund and 2.1 trillion pesos in National Treasury Contributions (ATN). He argued that this lack of federal support hinders the province's ability to manage climate risks and execute essential public works. Meanwhile, agricultural organizations like CARBAP expressed concern that rural infrastructure and roads remain inadequate to handle the expected heavy rainfall and saturated soils.
