Hydration benefits and myths of drinking water in the morning
Drinking water immediately upon waking is a common morning ritual, often believed to detoxify the body or stimulate digestion. However, scientific evidence suggests that while hydration is essential, water temperature does not provide a significant ‘detox’ effect. The body naturally manages detoxification through the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
After a night of sleep, the body loses fluids through breath, sweat, and urine. Consuming water in the morning helps replenish these lost fluids and supports functions such as temperature regulation and nutrient transport. Adequate hydration also aids digestion and can help prevent constipation by softening stool.
Experts note that there is no need to consume large quantities of water immediately after waking. A single glass of approximately 200 to 300 milliliters is sufficient. Whether the water is warm, cool, or at room temperature is largely a matter of personal preference, though extremely hot water should be avoided to prevent damage to the mouth and esophagus.
