Morning routines: Expert advice on dental hygiene and mental health

Experts are providing insights into the benefits of morning routines, specifically regarding dental hygiene and psychological well-being.

Anni Rønman, deputy chair of the Dentists' Association, recommends brushing teeth before breakfast. This practice removes bacterial buildup accumulated overnight and protects tooth enamel. Brushing immediately after consuming acidic foods like juice can damage enamel that has been microscopically softened by acid. While coffee does not have the same acidic impact, brushing before eating remains the preferred method.

Regarding dietary habits, research suggests that breakfast is often a repetitive routine rather than a series of new decisions. Psychologist Wendy Wood notes that approximately 43 percent of daily actions occur under similar conditions, allowing individuals to conserve willpower. Furthermore, studies from the University of Missouri indicate that reliable morning routines are linked to lower levels of depression, anxiety, and physical pain in older adults.
