Moroccan authorities ban and disperse pro-Palestine protests in Tangier
Moroccan security forces have repeatedly intervened to prevent and disperse pro-Palestine demonstrations in the cities of Tangier and Tetouan. Activists report that at least 17 protests have been banned in recent months as part of a growing crackdown on movements opposing normalization with Israel.
During a protest in Tangier on Sunday, October 11, security forces intervened to disperse demonstrators gathered at Faro Square. Organizers, including the Moroccan Front to Support Palestine and Oppose Normalization, reported that the intervention resulted in approximately 50 to 60 arrests, including minors, and left at least six protesters injured. While those detained were later released, human rights activists and witnesses alleged that some individuals were subjected to physical violence during transport to security centers.
The demonstrations were held to commemorate the third anniversary of the ‘Al-Aqsa Flood’ and to protest Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Protesters raised slogans condemning official normalization between Morocco and Israel. While similar solidarity protests have taken place in cities like Rabat and Marrakech, activists noted a specific pattern of bans targeting demonstrations in Tangier and Tetouan.
