Moroccan Bar Association Extends Nationwide Strike Over New Lawyers' Law

The Association of Lawyers’ Bodies in Morocco announced on July 20 that it will continue its full strike, suspending all professional services indefinitely. The strike follows the parliament’s approval of a new lawyers’ law that has been referred to the Constitutional Court for constitutional review. The association says the draft law undermines the profession’s independence, self‑governance and democratic principles, describing the dispute as a crisis of confidence and a breach of prior agreements. It urged all lawyers to maintain discipline, solidarity and readiness for further lawful protest actions while calling for a meeting of its council at a later date.

The protest reflects broader tensions between the legal profession and the Moroccan government over reforms that could affect the autonomy and organization of the bar.
