Moroccan CGT union demands political reforms and social rights
The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) in Morocco has called for comprehensive political and social reforms following a central office meeting in Rabat. The union is demanding the release of all political prisoners and the removal of restrictions on the National Union of Moroccan Students (UNEM), including the reinstatement of expelled students at Ibn Tofail University.
Addressing domestic issues, the CGT highlighted a loss of public trust in political institutions, citing a 78 percent boycott rate in recent legislative elections. The organization called for increased minimum wages to combat inflation, reforms to pension systems, and the withdrawal of the proposed strike law. They also urged the state to reclaim its role in essential sectors like education and health, while opposing privatization.
On a broader scale, the union criticized the influence of the Ministry of the Interior on media and expressed concerns regarding global conflicts, specifically mentioning the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as tensions involving Iran. The CGT emphasized the need for accountability in fighting corruption and ensuring a fair distribution of national wealth.
