Moroccan cinema research book released in Fez
A new collective book titled ‘Moroccan Cinema: Present Structures and Future Stakes’ has been released, compiling the proceedings of an international symposium held in Fez in December 2025. Coordinated by Dr. Saïd Chamlal and supported by Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, the 404-page work is published by Brant Ax Press.
The book is organized into four chapters covering various dimensions of the industry, including social, cultural, and political concerns; creative and artistic preoccupations; and cinematic viewing rituals. One chapter, written in French, focuses on gender and social issues. The publication is dedicated to the memory of the late Moroccan director Mohammed Meziane.
The research highlights that while Morocco is a leading cinematic experience in Africa, producing over twenty feature films annually, the industry faces significant challenges. These include defining a distinct aesthetic identity and overcoming historical distribution hurdles where local films struggled to compete with foreign productions. Recent trends show some Moroccan films achieving significant domestic box office success, though revenue levels still face ongoing challenges.
