Student cost of living in France reaches 1,300 euros monthly

According to an annual study by the student union Unef, the cost of living for students in France has increased by 1.66% over the last year, reaching an average monthly out-of-pocket expense of 1,300 euros. This figure marks the first time the monthly cost has exceeded the national poverty threshold.

The increase is primarily driven by rising costs in housing and transportation. Private sector rents averaged 627.11 euros per month, a 2.87% annual increase, while Crous residence rents rose to 426.36 euros. Transportation costs also rose, with non-scholarship students spending an average of 278.59 euros per month.

The Unef report highlights significant disparities among student groups. Non-EU international students face a much higher monthly burden, averaging 2,160.14 euros. Additionally, students from overseas territories are noted to pay between 314 and 408 euros more per year than those in mainland France. Since 2017, university registration fees have also risen by 37%.
