Morocco consumer groups warn of rising prices and demand better regulation

The Moroccan Observatory for Consumer Protection has raised concerns regarding potential price increases for traditional hammam services. Some operators are reportedly considering raising tariffs due to rising costs for firewood, fuel, and general operating expenses.

The Observatory emphasized that traditional baths are an essential hygiene and health service for many Moroccan families, particularly those without adequate home bathing facilities. While acknowledging the economic pressures faced by professionals, the organization stressed that any price hikes must be justified by objective data and transparently communicated to consumers to protect purchasing power.

Separately, the National Federation of Consumer Associations has submitted a ten-point memorandum to the Moroccan government. The federation is calling for more proactive consumer involvement in economic policy, proposing the creation of a national observatory for prices and purchasing power to monitor essential goods and services throughout the entire supply chain.
