Moroccan designers among finalists for 2026 Arab World Institute Design Prize

Five Moroccan creators have been selected as finalists for the 2026 Design Prize awarded by the Institute of the Arab World in Paris. The finalists compete in four main categories that celebrate innovative design, contemporary craft, architectural heritage, and sustainability.

Architect and designer Imane Mellah was shortlisted in the Contemporary Craft category for her textile work “Bab,” inspired by historic Moroccan medina doors and woven using Amazigh techniques. Architect Salima Naji reached the Grand Prize shortlist with a raw‑earth interpretation centre for the heritage of Tiznit, built within the city's historic walls. The firm 99+ X Architects, founded by engineers Alaa Halifi and Yassid Boudra in Casablanca, earned a place in the Impact award category for repurposing demolition waste to preserve Casablanca’s architectural memory. The Rising Talent category includes designer Othman Benchbara for his project “Irtah,” and another entry highlights the integration of traditional weaving with modern technology.

The Institute announced that winners will be revealed on 9 September during Paris Design Week, with an exhibition of all shortlisted projects running from 3 to 20 September. The competition underscores the growing international presence of Moroccan design and its blend of cultural identity, sustainability, and innovation.
