Moroccan journalists reject use of southern provinces in union politics

Journalists working across Morocco’s three southern regions—Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab, and Guelmim-Oued Noun—have signed an extensive petition protesting the involvement of these provinces in the electoral and political campaigns of the President of the National Press Syndicate.

The signatories, representing various electronic, radio, and television media outlets, accused the union leadership of using the southern branches as political tools to serve personal interests under a national and international union cover. They expressed surprise at receiving synchronized statements from these branches that utilized language inconsistent with professional union standards.

The petition calls for a rejection of these political alignments and advocates for union unity rather than division. It also references a previous petition by 11 executive office members seeking to correct management irregularities, including a demand to evaluate the 2026 National Press Council elections and address judicial rulings regarding the cancellation of certain membership elections.
