Moroccan lawyers maintain strike over draft law on the legal profession

The Association of Lawyers' Bodies in Morocco announced on 19 June 2026 that its members will continue a general strike, halting all legal services until a new notice is issued. The suspension follows a heated debate over a draft law governing the legal profession, which the association says threatens the profession’s independence, immunity and self‑regulation.

Local bar councils have joined the protest. The Beni Mellal bar called a two‑day work stoppage for 22‑23 June, while the Rabat bar reiterated its commitment to the nationwide strike and emphasized “unity of the professional front”. Both bodies criticised the lack of clarity in the legislative process and accused the justice minister of focusing on peripheral issues rather than core protections for lawyers.

The Casablanca bar, however, announced it will not participate in the strike, underscoring the differing responses among regional associations. All parties said the actions will remain temporary pending a meeting of the Council of Ministers and further parliamentary discussion of the draft law.
