Moroccan National Press Union warns of job losses and internal disputes
The National Press Union of Morocco (SNPM) has issued a warning regarding the future of public subsidies and their impact on media enterprises and employment stability. Following an emergency meeting in Casablanca, the union's executive office expressed concern that new subsidy criteria could exclude certain media companies, leading to job losses and structural imbalances within the sector.
The union is calling for the protection of journalists' rights, the renewal of collective agreements, and reforms to the National Press Council. They emphasized that public support should serve as a mechanism for professional stability rather than a cause for precariousness or layoffs.
Simultaneously, internal friction has emerged within the union. Eleven members of the executive office have issued a statement calling for a correction of the organization's path. They cited disputes regarding the management of the National Press Council elections, judicial rulings affecting leadership positions, and a lack of transparency in administrative decision-making. The dissenting members criticized what they described as individualistic management and a refusal to engage in internal dialogue to address organizational irregularities.
