Moroccan Parliament debates 2027 finance bill and cost of living measures
During the general discussion of the 2027 finance bill within the Finance and Economic Development Committee of the Moroccan House of Representatives, parliamentary groups presented diverging views on social measures and inflation control.
Majority parties, including the Authenticity and Modernity Party and the Istiqlal Party, praised the bill's social provisions. Key measures highlighted include increasing direct social support from 500 to 600 dirhams monthly by 2027, raising the minimum pension to 1,700 dirhams, and maintaining subsidies for butane gas, sugar, and flour. Supporters described the economic assumptions, such as a 3.7 percent growth target, as realistic.
Opposition members, including representatives from the Justice and Development Party, questioned the effectiveness of these measures in protecting purchasing power. Concerns were raised regarding market monopolies, particularly in the poultry sector where two actors reportedly control over 50 percent of the supply chain. To combat rising meat prices, proposals were made to import livestock from Mauritania and establish a certified slaughterhouse in the Guerguerat region. Other suggestions included creating a digital platform for price comparison and providing better support to small-scale farmers to rebuild national livestock herds.
