Moroccan pharmacists warn of drug security crisis and pharmacy bankruptcies

The National Coalition of Justice and Development Party Pharmacists has issued a sharp critique of the Moroccan government’s performance regarding health, medicine, and the pharmaceutical sector. The coalition warns that structural failures are threatening national drug security and the stability of the healthcare system.

Key grievances include the prolonged institutional deadlock of the National Order of Pharmacists, with elections for its councils stalled since 2017. The coalition also criticized the government for making unilateral decisions regarding pharmaceutical economics and drug pricing, rather than using a participatory approach. They warned that revising ministerial decrees on drug pricing could destabilize the national pharmaceutical industry and weaken pharmacies.

Furthermore, the coalition highlighted a concerning rise in drug shortages, particularly for essential medicines and treatments for chronic diseases. They also noted an economic crisis within the sector, stating that approximately one-third of pharmacies in the Kingdom are facing the threat of bankruptcy. Regarding universal health coverage, the group pointed out a paradox where state funding through the National Social Security Fund has increased, while the number of vulnerable beneficiaries previously covered by medical assistance systems has declined.
