Moroccan political parties claim sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla
During a debate on the new government's program in the Moroccan Parliament, both ruling coalition and opposition parties asserted Morocco's claim to the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which leads the governing coalition, called for continued national and diplomatic efforts to “complete the territorial unity” of Morocco. The party stated that the goal of recovering Ceuta, Melilla, and occupied Moroccan islands should be pursued through a “responsible national vision” based on historical and legal legitimacy, dialogue, and peaceful means.
The Istiqlal Party (PI), also part of the governing coalition, emphasized that while the partnership between Spain and Morocco is deep and important, it cannot be built at the expense of Morocco's sovereignty or territorial integrity. The party rejected any attempts to use these sovereignty issues for partisan or media purposes, or to use them as instruments of pressure or blackmail.
