Moroccan press groups criticize National Press Council election logistics

Moroccan media organizations and rights groups have criticized the organizational and logistical conditions surrounding the National Press Council elections held on September 15, 2026. The National Center for Media and Human Rights and the National Syndicate of Moroccan Press reported significant irregularities, including severe overcrowding, long queues lasting several hours, and inadequate facilities for voters and staff.

Specific concerns were raised regarding the secrecy of the ballot, with reports of voters discussing choices with individuals using mobile phones before entering voting booths. In Rabat, poor lighting at the voting site forced organizers to use phone lights to facilitate the process. Additionally, staff members reportedly worked shifts exceeding 15 hours without sufficient food, water, or rest.

Both organizations held the interim government committee responsible for these failures, stating that the mismanagement undermined the integrity and credibility of the professional election. They have called for official clarifications and a broader institutional debate regarding the capacity of interim committees to manage the press sector effectively.
