Moroccan lawyers to suspend strike on October 7
The Association of Bar Associations of Morocco (ABAM) has decided to suspend its indefinite strike starting October 7, 2026, following more than four months of professional service stoppages across the country. The decision was reached during a meeting in Rabat on September 20 to evaluate the ongoing dispute regarding the new law regulating the legal profession.
Lawyers maintain that the suspension is temporary and does not constitute a retreat from their professional demands or an acceptance of the contested law. The association stated that the timing is significant, occurring just two days before the King opens the new legislative session and following elections that will produce a new government. The move is intended to allow new constitutional institutions to address what lawyers describe as legislative flaws that threaten the independence, immunity, and self-management of the profession.
While the Federation of Young Lawyers Associations has expressed continued commitment to escalation and various forms of protest, the broader legal community is preparing for a period of mobilization. The prolonged strike has caused significant disruptions in the judicial system, affecting court proceedings and the rights of litigants and detainees.
