Morocco advances agricultural innovation and biotechnology

Morocco is implementing the ‘Génération Green 2020-2030’ blueprint to restructure its agroindustrial framework through scientific research and technological innovation. In Rabat, discussions held in coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations focused on preserving genetic resources, ensuring livestock sustainability, and digitalizing regional markets to connect rural producers with urban consumers.

To combat food inflation and supply chain inefficiencies, the government is establishing seasonal oversight plans for essential goods. These plans aim to align domestic market needs with production forecasts and export commitments. Additionally, the agricultural sector is leveraging biotechnology to modernize production. In Errachidia, the PalmINRA laboratory, part of the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), is utilizing in vitro multiplication to produce healthy, disease-free date palm strains. This initiative supports the rehabilitation of oasis ecosystems and has contributed to the production of over two million plants, including major varieties like Mejhoul.

These efforts come as the country manages structural cost pressures and climate shifts. The government’s fiscal framework also includes contractual obligations for producers to stabilize the supply of essential goods, such as sugar and oilseeds.
