Morocco and Chile Sign Sanitary and Phytosanitary Cooperation Protocol

The Moroccan National Food Safety Office (ONSSA) and Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) signed a cooperation protocol in Santiago on Friday. The agreement aims to harmonise quarantine, phytosanitary and animal health procedures for agricultural and food product exchanges, simplify formalities, cut border processing times and facilitate smoother trade flows.

Morocco’s ambassador to Santiago, Kenza El Ghali, called the pact a decisive step toward stronger sanitary confidence and highlighted its link to the bio‑oceanic corridor and the planned Atlantic port of Dakhla, which could become a joint maritime corridor linking South America, Africa and the Atlantic. Chilean under‑secretary for International Economic Relations, Paula Estévez, noted that bilateral trade has risen from $10 million to over $80 million in five years and sees new opportunities for producers. Under‑secretary of Agriculture Francesco Venezian Urzúa underscored the strategic value of the partnership for Chile’s diversification and access to Africa’s 1.58 billion‑person market.
