Morocco and Mistral AI launch open-source tools for Darija

The Moroccan Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, in partnership with France-based Mistral AI, has released two open-source artificial intelligence tools designed to process Moroccan Darija. Released on September 29, 2026, as part of the ‘Maroc Digital 2030’ strategy, these tools aim to address the linguistic nuances of the local dialect.

The first tool is a classifier capable of distinguishing Moroccan Darija from other Arabic dialects. The second tool utilizes Mistral AI’s Voxtral architecture to provide automatic speech recognition. This model is specifically adapted to handle code-switching, allowing it to transcribe conversations that alternate between Arabic, French, and English—a common occurrence in Moroccan professional and daily life.

Rather than being a consumer-facing application, these tools are intended as reusable components for developers, startups, public administrations, and researchers. Potential applications include automating public services, media analysis, educational tools, and improving digital access through oral transcription.
