Morocco and Portugal revive plans for direct submarine electricity link
Morocco and Portugal have agreed to reactivate technical studies for a direct submarine electricity cable to connect the Moroccan grid more directly to Europe. This strategic initiative aims to diversify Morocco's energy routes and reduce its current reliance on Spain for electricity exchanges.
Currently, Morocco is linked to the European grid via two submarine cables connecting to Spain, which have a combined capacity of 1,400 MW. The new project seeks to bypass the Spanish network by establishing a direct link through the Atlantic Ocean.
Both nations intend to jointly petition the European Commission to designate the interconnection as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), a status that could unlock European funding. A high-level bilateral summit is planned for early 2027 to finalize technical specifications and investment frameworks.
