Morocco announces candidacy for UN Security Council 2028-2029
Morocco has officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stated in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, that the bid reflects the kingdom's regional and international standing and its accumulated diplomatic experience.
Morocco has previously served on the Security Council during the terms 1963-1964, 1992-1993, and 2012-2013. If elected, the country intends to focus on key issues including climate change, development, counter-terrorism, regional stability, and multilateral cooperation, guided by a vision centered on peace, development, and the rule of law.
Additionally, Bourita highlighted several Moroccan-led initiatives, such as the African convention on the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of child soldiers. He also noted the progress of the Atlantic African States Process (PEAA), which aims to foster maritime cooperation and security amidst global geopolitical tensions affecting trade and navigation.
