Morocco announces UN Security Council candidacy for 2028-2029
Morocco has officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita confirmed the bid during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
If successful, this would mark Morocco’s fourth term on the Council, following previous memberships in 1963-1964, 1992-1993, and 2012-2013. The candidacy is based on the vision of King Mohammed VI, aiming to position the Kingdom as a reliable contributor to international peace, security, and sustainable development.
Diplomatic efforts to secure the seat are expected to focus heavily on gaining support from African nations before moving to a vote in the General Assembly. Additionally, recent diplomatic developments at the UN have seen countries such as Paraguay, Mauritius, Jamaica, and Bolivia express increased support for Morocco’s position regarding the Sahara autonomy plan.
