Morocco approves price cuts for nearly 300 medicines

Morocco has approved an initial list of nearly 300 medicines that will see price reductions ranging from 10% to 70%. This move follows the publication of a new regulatory framework for drug pricing in the Official Bulletin.

The reform, introduced by decree n° 2. 25. 631, replaces the mechanism used since 2013. Key changes include increasing the frequency of price reviews from every five years to every three years and updating the international comparison methods used for pricing. For medicines with a manufacturer's price (excluding tax) exceeding 300 dirhams, the lowest observed price in reference countries will now be applied. For those at or below this threshold, the average of reference prices will be used.

This implementation phase aims to improve patient access to treatments, reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and better manage pharmaceutical spending within the mandatory health insurance system. Further price reviews for existing medicines are expected within twelve months of the new system's entry into force.
