Morocco butane gas import costs rise despite lower volumes

Morocco’s expenditure on liquefied butane gas imports from the European Union increased by approximately MAD 200 million during the first eight months of 2026, even as shipment volumes declined. According to Eurostat data, the total value of European butane shipments to Morocco reached €182.4 million (roughly MAD 2.04 billion), representing a 10.89% increase compared to €164.49 million during the same period in 2025.

While the total value rose, the volume of butane imported from the EU’s 27 member states fell by 11.44%, dropping from 413,321 metric tons to 366,037 metric tons. This discrepancy is driven by a 25.21% increase in the average declared unit value, which rose from approximately €398 per ton to €498 per ton.

Data indicates a significant drop in August shipments, which fell 67.20% year-over-year. The increase in declared value reflects reported trade values and may be influenced by specific contract prices, commercial terms, and shipment compositions rather than serving as a direct international benchmark price.
