Morocco butane gas subsidy costs drop to 12 billion dirhams

Public expenditure for butane gas subsidies in Morocco decreased by 20 percent in 2025, falling to 12 billion dirhams from 15 billion dirhams in 2024. According to a report attached to the 2027 finance bill, this reduction is attributed to a decrease in the average subsidy per 12kg cylinder—from 61 dirhams in 2024 to 51 dirhams in 2025—as well as improved import conditions.

Import costs, including insurance and shipping, fell by 4.8 percent, from 559 dollars per ton in 2024 to 532 dollars in 2025. The strengthening of the dirham against the dollar also helped reduce the import bill. Over an 11-year period from 2015 to 2025, the state spent a total of 137.8 billion dirhams to support butane gas prices.

National consumption of 12kg butane cylinders also saw a decline of 3.5 percent in 2025, totaling 227.5 million cylinders compared to 235.7 million in 2024. This follows a multi-year upward trend where consumption rose from 199.1 million cylinders in 2018 to 235.7 million in 2024.
