Morocco calls for tailored international support for middle-income countries
During the 11th annual ministerial meeting of the Friends of Middle-Income Countries, Moroccan Minister Bourita advocated for enhanced international cooperation tailored to the specific vulnerabilities of middle-income nations. He emphasized the importance of the 2024 Rabat Ministerial Declaration, which calls for a United Nations Strategic Action Plan to address the unique needs of countries transitioning toward higher income levels.
Minister Bourita highlighted Morocco’s commitment to South-South and triangular cooperation as a driver for shared value creation, citing initiatives such as the Atlantic Initiative for Sahel states and the Process of Atlantic African States. Morocco previously chaired the Friends of Middle-Income Countries group from January 2023 until April 2025.
The meeting concluded with a ministerial declaration reaffirming the Rabat and Makati Declarations. The participants called for the adaptation of international development cooperation and the formulation of a Strategic Action Plan to ensure more equitable and differentiated support for these nations.
