Morocco consumer group urges intervention over taxi fare hikes

The National Federation of Consumer Associations in Morocco has called on the Ministry of Interior to intervene regarding reported illegal increases in taxi fares in several regions. The federation expressed concern that some transport professionals have begun implementing price hikes despite ongoing government subsidies intended to offset rising fuel costs.

According to the federation, the government’s decision to provide direct and exceptional support to the transport sector was predicated on maintaining current public transport tariffs without passing additional costs to citizens. The association argued that consumers should not bear a double burden: funding public subsidies while simultaneously facing higher service costs due to the same fuel price fluctuations.

The federation emphasized that taxi fares are determined by administrative authorities and cannot be unilaterally changed by professionals. They urged local governors and officials to increase field monitoring, ensure compliance with legal tariffs, and establish effective mechanisms for handling citizen complaints.
