Morocco defeats Netherlands on penalties to reach World Cup round of 8

Morocco upset the Netherlands in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held at the BBVA stadium in Monterrey, Mexico. The match finished 1‑1 after regular time and extra time, with Cody Gakpo scoring for the Dutch side in the 72nd minute and Issa Diop equalising for Morocco in the 91st minute of stoppage time.

The tie was decided by a penalty shoot‑out. Moroccan goalkeeper Bono saved several attempts while Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made key saves. Missed kicks came from the Netherlands' Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, Crysencio Summerville and Morocco's Achraf Hakimi. Ismael Saibari converted the decisive spot‑kick, sending Morocco through to the quarter‑finals where they will face Canada.
