Morocco disputes Spanish proposal to retain Western Sahara airspace control

The Popular Party (PP) in the Canary Islands has proposed that Spain maintain control over the airspace above Western Sahara through Enaire, the Spanish air traffic service. The proposal seeks to ensure that the regional parliament and the Canary Islands government are kept informed of negotiations with Morocco and that any changes to airspace management receive approval from regional authorities and international organizations.

David Morales, a PP representative from Gran Canaria, argued that maintaining Spanish control is vital for aviation safety, the accessibility of the archipelago, and Spain's military interests. He also noted the importance of the region for humanitarian and migration-related operations involving the military and Guardia Civil.

Morocco has expressed discontent regarding this proposal, viewing it as a challenge to its claims of sovereignty over the territory. The dispute over Western Sahara remains a sensitive geopolitical issue involving Morocco and the Polisario Front, with the airspace control serving as a focal point for broader territorial and political tensions.
