Morocco expands infrastructure projects in Western Sahara
Morocco is expanding its infrastructure and economic presence in Western Sahara, a territory the United Nations classifies as non-self-governing. This expansion includes wind farms, tourist complexes, and significant road projects.
As part of a broader strategy, Morocco has completed a highway network exceeding 1,800 kilometers as of 2025. A major upcoming project is the Donald J. Trump highway, a 1,000-kilometer route through coastal areas. The latest investment in this project is reported at 880 million euros, symbolizing support from Washington.
Legal experts, including Juan Soroeta of UPV/EHU, suggest these developments are part of an effort to normalize an occupation that is not recognized under international law. While the Moroccan monarchy drives much of the investment, companies from Germany, France, Finland, and the Netherlands are also participating.
