Morocco expands military capabilities with Airbus and U.S. defense deals
Morocco is significantly expanding its military capabilities through major defense acquisitions from both European and American suppliers. Airbus Helicopters has finalized a deal to provide 10 H225M Caracal helicopters to the Royal Moroccan Air Force. These aircraft are intended for combat search and rescue (CSAR), special operations, and medical evacuation, replacing a Puma fleet that has been in service for over 40 years.
Simultaneously, the United States is strengthening its role as a key defense partner for Rabat. U.S. Army logistical documents for fiscal year 2027 indicate that ten HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) launchers are currently under contract for delivery to Morocco. This follows a 2023 authorization for a potential sale of 18 HIMARS vehicles and associated missiles.
Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shows that Morocco's imports of heavy conventional weapons increased by 12% between 2021 and 2025, making it the largest importer of such equipment in Africa during that period.
