Morocco expands Noor Ouarzazate solar complex with new plants

The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) has awarded a contract to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Spain’s SENER to develop the Noor II and Noor III solar plants. This expansion of the Noor Ouarzazate complex will add a combined capacity of 350 megawatts (MW).

Unlike conventional photovoltaic systems, these plants utilize Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology. This method employs molten salt to store thermal energy, allowing for electricity generation even after sunset. This capability is central to Morocco’s strategy to reduce its heavy reliance on imported fuels, as the country previously depended on external sources for over 97% of its energy demand.

The project is supported by international financing, including a $519 million loan from the World Bank and backing from the African Development Bank.
