Morocco expands renewable energy and green hydrogen ambitions

Morocco is positioning itself as a significant energy partner for the European Union by expanding its renewable energy infrastructure and green hydrogen production capabilities. The kingdom aims to enter the European green fuel market with a potential production exceeding 560,000 tons annually over the next decade. Key strategic pillars include expanding solar and wind projects, establishing green hydrogen production via electrolysis, and converting production into derivatives like green ammonia for maritime transport.

Major industry players, including TAQA Morocco, Moeve, and ORNX, are involved in developing renewable capacities expected to exceed 10 gigawatts. Initial production phases are projected to begin between 2029 and 2031, focusing on regions such as Guelmim-Oued Noun, Dakhla, and Laayoune, which offer high solar radiation and wind speeds.

Despite these industrial advancements, Morocco faces internal socio-economic challenges. While the country has achieved major transformations in infrastructure, transport, and social protection, significant gaps remain regarding unemployment, education quality, healthcare, and purchasing power. There is an ongoing debate regarding the disconnect between large-scale national investment strategies and the tangible improvement of daily living standards for citizens.
