Morocco expands renewable energy through biomass and growing electricity production
Morocco is positioned as a leading African destination for biomass electricity investment, alongside Egypt and South Africa. The global biomass market is projected to exceed $171.02 billion by 2031, growing at a compound annual rate of approximately 6% from 2026.
In Morocco, the “Reefact Africa” project serves as a model for integrating energy, water, and food production. Utilizing biomass gasification technology, the project converts agricultural and food waste into electricity, heat, potable water, and biochar. A pilot unit in the Sidi Mokhtar region uses olive pits, pomace, and branches to produce thermal energy and biochar for use as fertilizer, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
National electricity production in Morocco rose by 2.5% during the first seven months of 2026, driven largely by a 19.8% increase in renewable energy production. However, electricity imports increased by 31.7% during the same period to meet domestic demand, while exports saw a significant decline of 44.2% as of July 2026. Overall electricity demand grew by 9.4% by the end of July 2026.
